Fact: Nearly half of California children eat fast food on any given day

Field Trips

GENERAL TIPS

  • Field trips are a wonderful way to engage students in hands-on learning about the natural world, our food supply, nutrition, the local economy, and our rich California history. If children can touch, taste and see food where it is grown, they are much more likely to develop an interest in what they eat.
  • Some of the field trip programs we have suggested fill up quickly. Plan early for the best dates and options.
  • Some of these programs are free and most of them offer partial or full scholarships.

VISITING A FARMERS MARKET

Definition Locavore: One who tries to eat only locally grown foods

Support your local farmers! Visiting a farmer’s market is one of the easiest ways to educate students about local food. Learn the essential role agriculture and food play in the life and economy of our region. Many farmers markets operate in non-winter months and only on weekends, but you should be able to find a weekday market close to your school. Put together a scavenger hunt or work with your students in advance to develop a list of questions they want to ask farmers during their tour. Meet the farmers and learn how they grow their crops, where they come from, what is in season, and why they choose to farm. We believe that a trip to the farmers market will get your students excited about making healthy food choices by building a sense of connection to the people who grow our food.
